Macular Degneration

Macular degeneration, usually called Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD or AMD), is an eye disease in which people over 60 lose their central vision, but peripheral vision will still be normal.
There are two primary forms: wet and dry macular degeneration. While both types may lead to vision loss, they differ in their root causes and symptoms.
Wet macular (neovascular) degeneration occurs when fragile and abnormal blood vessels grow under the macula which are prone to leaking fluid and blood into the retina, contributing to scarring and rapid central vision loss. Dry macular degeneration (non-neovascular) occurs due to the gradual breakdown of cells in the macula and the accumulation of small deposits (drusen). Dry AMD progresses more slowly. It’s possible to have both forms at once.
Acupuncture treatment for Macular Degeneration
Acupuncture treatment for AMD is a combination of Traditional Acupuncture, Micro Acupuncture 48 and Electronic Stimulation Acupuncture and has shown promise in multiple studies (1). We stimulate specific acupuncture points in the hands and feet to improve the blood flow to the retina and macula, and to stimulate nerve activity. Acupuncture also sends nerve impulses up to the brain to fire off the optic nerve, retina and specifically the nerve cells in the macula and awaken dormant cells. Acupuncture appears to dilate the blood vessels around the eyes and increase blood flow to bring nutrients and oxygen to the retinal cells (2).
Our intention with treatment is to awaken dormant cells and help regenerate damaged or sick cells, so timing of treatment is very critical. The longer you wait the more severe or permanent vascular and nerve damage to the macula and the retina. The sooner you get treatment the better your chances for improvement and long term preservation.
(Note: if you have a bleed, it is a medical emergency and you must attend your eye hospital immediately).
